OK, as in the Air thread, v0.71, working up the V0.72 with small fixes... v0.71 has the re-introduced "... Warships with Scoutplanes" idea v0.57 (??), only the number of planes in a squadron was increased. Previously, we didn't see many airplanes from the ships. Testing prior to their re-introduction showed them functioning satisfactorily, and basically "as intended". We have now added specific calls to the ships in all of the Campaign files. Previously, the RGG (Random Generated Group) in most of the Campaign "layers" would use "GENERIC" calls, asking for a Type=6 CL or a Type=7 CA. The scout plane idea in the game requires that a ship be an "aircraft carrier", such as a Type=8 or a Type=9, but we don't want to lump the CL, CA & BB in with them... Hence the use of the Type=18 (Elite Escort Carrier) and Type=19 (Super Fleet Carrier), and the changing of those designation names to "Light Warship with Scout Planes" and "Heavy Warship with Scout Planes" respectively. Included in that "Light Warships..." category, besides the CL, are four of the IJN AI submarines that carried airplanes... have your look-outs at their best!
Version 0.71 of the mod also continues with the Japanese AI submarines, including their use of torpedoes and deck guns as weapons of offense. To get a ship to "attack", the game requires an "attack" ship, such as a DD or DE. They Type=17 designation was unused in the game, other than one vessel used in special circumstances (Bungo Pete), so we moved that vessel to another category, and made all of the AI submarines Type=17, "Elite Destroyer Escorts", again changing the designation to "Submarine". If they detect an "enemy combatant", they will now attack - even to their own detriment... The DD have also been outfitted with torpedoes. Their "gun" to "shoot" the torpedo at its intended target is an AA gun, so its range is shorter. This makes the vessels NOT shoot their torpedo stores willy-nilly from 10k yards, but rather from 1500 yards.
New ships lately have been the CL Katori, credit going to ZUIKAKU1944 (2604??), which has a much more accurate hull than previous offerings. It therefore replaces the game's old Katori offering. Also now in the game are three merchant vessels from Hitman, of Pacific Aces fame. They are the Ada Maru, Aden Maru, and Ansyu Maru. Look for them as targets! Also added-in is a Salt Lake City, clone of the Pensacola (Early War) done by CapnScurvy. This ship allows for a Pensacola Class (Early War) vessel throughout the war, which is what the Salt Lake City was. Another recent addition along with the Shinsu Maru, is 3 versions of ZUIKAKU1944's Daihatsu Barge, an ubiquitous IJN transport, similar to the US LCVP, which has been re-worked by s7rikeback and CapnScurvy, along with the PT boat.
As for "needing" ships, I don't think the game "needs" any, but we are always open to suggestions and would love to have more... It would be nice to have tater offer his Japanes Merchant Marine Mod (hint hint), and we've got the folks that could port that over... We might get another submarine, but everyone needs to keep their fingers crossed on this one... Not something that you run into every day...
